About the website
This website is intended as a simplified, concise, and widely accessible treatment of topics with a philosophical and spiritual theme, including some of those brought up in more detail in a book I wrote not so long ago: A Theory of Us: Philosophy, God, and the Meaning of Life.
So, why be interested in philosophy and spirituality? Among other reasons, because what we believe matters. In fact, it matters a great deal. Our beliefs shape the way we see the world, and when we hold very poor beliefs, our lives can come to suffer greatly as a result.
One area in particular where I think people tend to hold very poor beliefs is spirituality. While billions of people around the world believe in the truth of Christianity or Islam, there is no good reason to believe that either one is correct, and both appear to be harmful in a number of significant ways. Moreover, the so-called "new age" movement, which people may turn to for answers if they aren't convinced of any mainstream religion's truth, raises just as many problems.
By applying philosophy and its rational methods to key questions in spirituality, we can not only reveal where we have gotten things wrong, but also do a lot better than we have so far done there. Or so I believe.
Born and raised in New Zealand, I am passionate about philosophy and the power of reason and ideas to shape our lives for the better. Academically my main interests are in the history and philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, epistemology, and social psychology.
Besides all that, I love photography, videography, cooking, music, playing guitar, and travel.
